The Jams
Let us enter Ryley Walker’s broad lexicon of the jams. He is a fingerstyle acoustic and electric player who can evoke a 1968 Joe Boyd album production, the raga-tizing drones of a guitarist such as Robbie Basho, the chiming, fuzzy timbres of Arthur Lee, and Thrill Jockey’s halcyon curation of 1990’s Chicago Underground Rock. His recordings and tours are recombinant and evolving studies. We think of Tim Buckley or Todd Rundgren when reviewing Ryley’s recorded catalogue. You can have your favorites and your vexations along the way but you can’t call it static. If you are game for studies in idiom-circumventing beauties such as Starsailor or the Todd double album, consider a night out with Ryley Walker’s trio with bassist Andrew Young and drummer Chris Corsano at Timucua Arts.
On A Fulcrum Of Unlike Studies
Those song titles to start. Then the explication. Ryley Walker lyrics read as personal examinations navigating a sinuous path. They play as coding that can perch on a fulcrum of verdant and unlike studies. An elegiac, restful estate garden from the countryside of Kent? The restive Overbrook Hotel hedge maze from The Shining? A Product Of Your Environment
Ryley currently resides in New England, sent several years in Brooklyn, was born in Rockford, Illinois but his early, impressionable adult experiences lie in 2010’s Chicago. The Indie and Punk scenes of the day, the Second City’s Math Rock, Out Rock Underground, and Avant Jazz subsets joined his from-afar British Folk Rock studies. Walker full-length and EP releases since 2014 have played catch and release with many of these identities. Ringing, spectral guitars of Daniel Bachman and Bill MacKay make sense as Walker collaborations but so do the works with Gastr Del Sol and Tortoise members David Grubbs and John McEntire. Chuck in creative music improvisors such as Fred Lonberg-Holm and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (like Chris Corsano, previous cm5 concerts guests) and the formula evolves (and evolves and evolves). If anything reads as over-curated cool, reset your palate with his The Lillywhite Sessions- a track-for-track interpretation of an unreleased Dave Matthews Band album.

There’s the January 2022 EP So Certain to fan out on the merch table and support from the stage. Walker currently delivers via his own Husky Pants Records but has worked through labels whose names are admirable and venerable filters: Tompkins Square, Drag City, Thrill Jockey, and Dead Oceans.
